Few people realize that the Comanche Indians were the greatest warring tribe in American history. Their forty-year battle with settlers held up the development of the new nation. Empire of the Summer Moon tells of the rise and fall of this fierce, powerful, and proud tribe, and begins in 1836 with the kidnapping of a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower blue eyes named Cynthia Ann Parker. She grew to love her captors and eventually became famous as the "White Squaw." She married a powerful Comanche chief, and their son, Quanah, became a warrior who was never defeated and whose bravery and military brilliance in the Texas panhandle made him a legend as one of the greatest of the Plains Indian chiefs. In this vivid piece of writing, S. C. Gwynne describes in sometimes brutal detail the savagery of both whites and Comanches and, despite the distance of time, demonstrates how truly shocking these events were, juxtaposed against the haunting story of an unforgettable figure of a woman caught between two worlds.

The Age of Aquarius

!: The Age of Aquarius

The popular American musical "Hair" in the 1960's had a song, called "The Age Of Aquarius". Because both the song and the musical were so popular, the interest in astrology at the time was greatly increased and it has been constantly on the rise ever since. It was not just the musical that opened up many people's minds and hearts to astrology. Many people knew and could feel that there is something in the air - they could not describe exactly what - but they were certain that they were on the brink of great, global, far-reaching changes. The world around them was changing rapidly. Old social models did not work, new "weird" trends were appearing and although these trends looked shocking at first many people knew intuitively that these were the forerunners of the future.

Even without studying astrology it is apparent that the 20th century as a whole was very different to the 19th century. During the last 100 years the conditions of living on Earth changed dramatically. On the other side if we compare the total changes during the 19th century with those during the 18th century or the 18th century with the 17th century we will not find between them such radical differences. It is true that even then, every new generation brought about slightly new ideas than the previous one - which is completely normal - but the changes as a whole seem to happen very slowly and almost unnoticeable. This seemed to be the case throughout many centuries during medieval times.

And then the 20th century came along. From this point onwards it seemed like the clocks started running ten times faster. First of all we can observe that people made a huge step forward in all the fields of science and technologies. What was considered science fiction by Jules Vern not such a long time ago is a reality today.

100 years ago it took a week to deliver a letter from Paris to London. Today it takes 10 seconds to dial a number and talk with anyone anywhere in the world. Alternatively, we can log on the Internet in any chat room and communicate with millions of people around the world. Yet, in our days people have become very private and communicate much less with each other than in old times. Most young people today do not have the basic skills to communicate in person and feel comfortable communicating with others only when they are in front of their computers.

100 years ago the meaning of the term "divorce" was generally not known to the majority of people. A woman could re-marry only if her husband deceased. Today young girls, sipping their beers in the pubs are flirting with the young guys who are having a glass of wine. It is absolutely obvious that we have undergone dramatic changes in our society and it is quite likely that more are on the way.

The question arises: why did these changes begin occurring exactly on the brink of the 20th century and not, let's say, 200 or 300 years ago? Is this happening by chance or are there profound reasons for this? To answer this question we have to bear in mind that first of all nothing happens by chance; and I mean absolutely nothing. Even the most trivial event - for example the way you brush your teeth in the morning - is full of reason, and can lead to significant insights about your psychological functioning, if you know how to interpret it. However, the vast majority of people are largely unaware of the real reasons for their actions and for this reason they prefer to say that things are happening by chance.

If even the most insignificant events do not happen by chance, then it becomes quite obvious that the global, large-scale, universal changes are a product of a very careful and thorough planning by the spirits, responsible for the future of our planet. It is virtually impossible, however, for the mere mortal human to communicate directly with those spirits. This task is unachievable even for our guardian angels - for the spirits that control the global changes of the Earth reside too high in the spiritual hierarchy. In direct contact with them could simply turn us into ashes. But there are other ways to communicate with them. The most powerful and the most accurate tool, given to man, which can be used in this regard is Astrology. This ancient science-if studied properly-can give us the answers to some of the most intimate plans for the future of our planet and allows us to glimpse the direction in which those spirits are leading us. I will try to briefly outline here how we can do this.

As we know from my previous publications in "Universal Mind" there are two important circles in astrology-the celestial equator and the ecliptic. The first one is the projection of the earth equator on an imaginarycelestial sphere and the latter is the trajectory which is marked by the Sun, the Moon and the other planets as they travel around the earth. These two circles intersect in two points - the March Equinox (which is in 0° in Aries) and September Equinox (0° in Libra). The axis that is determined by these two points has its two ends anchored in two opposite signs of the Zodiac. This axis can be represented symbolically as an arrow. Since Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, the March Equinox represents the tip of the arrow, while the September Equinox corresponds to its bottom.

In its movement around the Sun the Earth does not make one full revolution per year, but it lags behind a bit. For this reason, each four years we add one extra day to compensate for it - 29 of February. Even this is not enough, though, and each year the summer arrives a few hours earlier. Thus for 72 years the point of the equinox is moving backwards by 1°. The whole celestial circle (360°) is divided by 12 signs of the Zodiac and each one of them occupies 30° of the entire circle. Since the equinox is moving backwards by 1° for 72 years it means that the time it will take for it to travel through each sign of the Zodiac is 30 times 72 years, i.e. 2.160 years. The time it takes for the equinox to move backwards through one of the signs of the Zodiac completely (about 2.000 years) determines the Great Years (or Ages). This fact is extremely important in the human evolution for several reasons. It means that similar to how people can be born under the sign ofLeo, Libra or whatever the case may be, so the Earth also can be "born" at different times under different signs. These periods, however, last for much longer than the transient human life - in average they last for about 2,160 years. These Great Years do not start and end overnight; sometimes they can overlap each other for 100 years and more. In other words, as a man can be born as Leo and then in his next life he can be born as Scorpio, for example, so the Earth undergoes similar transformations every 2,000 years or so, but without really dying and being reborn.

Coming back to the point where we started this article from, we can observe that the reason why the 20th century was so eventful and action-packed is exactly this - our Earth will not be Pisces any more, but will resemble more and more the qualities of Aquarius. Similar to how two people born under these two signs are very different from each other, so our Earth had to undergo dramatic changes in order to reflect the characteristics of its new sign. The last time when the Earth had to go through similar fundamental transformation was about 2,000 years ago when Jesus Christ were born, thus marking the end of the Age of Taurus and the beginning of the Age of Pisces.

Let's briefly outline here some of the Great Ages in sequence in order to gain a better understanding how this process works:

The Age of Leo (10,000 - 8,000 B.C.) This is the earlier age that the modern science can speculate about on the premises of any remaining evidence. Leo is the sign of creativity and it is interesting that the almost only evidence that survived from that era are some prehistoric, cave paintings. Even the heraldic is very Leonean and lions were frequently depicted in those paintings. Leo is a fire sign and this is exactly the period, when man conquered the fire and started using it for domestic purposes. The opposite, polar sign always plays great role in astrology and some very original stone tools also survived from that age, echoing precisely the originality trait of the polar sign to Leo - Aquarius. The Age of Cancer (8,000 -6,000 B.C.) It was during this period of time, when man left the caves and started building dwellings, reflecting in this way the typical home-loving trait of Cancer. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and the Moon is associated with motherhood. Interestingly, most of the survived carvings from this epoch depict fertility and protection (another prominent Cancerian quality). The influence of the opposite sign of Capricorn (earth sign) is evident in the beginning of the agriculture and fishing. The Age of Gemini (6,000 - 4,000 B.C.) Gemini rules communication and intellect. It is evident that during this epoch man became ready for the first time in history to develop intellectually and to move away from his local environment. The first forms of writings appeared - initially as rough symbols carved on stones and later in the form of cuneiform writing tablets. Not surprisingly, trading and commerce started to develop for the first time in history, since both of these activities are governed by Mercury - the planet which rules Gemini. The first sea voyages took place as it should be expected with the influence of the polar sign - Sagittarius. The Age of Taurus (4,000 - 2,000 B.C.) The keywords for the sign of Taurus - stability and permanence are very evident in the Egyptian pyramids, built during this epoch. The symbolism of the Age is also very Taurean - Ra is the celestial bull, Asari is the Earthly Bull, the first letter of the ancient Hebrew alphabet is "aleph", i.e. the bull. The polar influence of Scorpio is powerfully marked by the increased interest in death and life after death, which is so prominent for this sign. The ancient Egyptians developed embalming and mummification techniques that are unsurpassed even in our times. The Age of Aries (2,000 B.C. - A.D.0) During this period of time the ancient Greek civilization and later the Roman Empire came into play. The aggressive, assertive qualities of the Aries are very evident in every sphere of life, and this is to be expected, when Mars, the God of War is running the show. Romans became the unsurpassed warriors of all times, establishing an empire of an unprecedented size for many centuries - something that was never achieved before. The concern with fitness and sport, characteristic for ancient Greeks transmuted later in grandiose spectacles of gladiator battles for Romans. The influence of the opposite sign - Libra - is very interesting here, since the desire for physical supremacy was complemented with a passion for democracy and a desire to see the justice done. The Greeks are the founders of the first democratic government. The Parthenon and the other classical Greek and Roman buildings of this era are stunningly beautiful. This is not a surprise, bearing in mind that Libra is ruled by Venus - the planet of beauty and harmony. It is interesting to make the parallel in the architecture of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. Both types of buildings are beautiful, since Venus rules both Libra and Taurus. However, the Egyptian buildings reflect the more earthly qualities of Taurus - permanency, stability and practicality, while the Greek buildings echo the traits of Libra - beauty, harmony and perfection. It is interesting to notice that the Old Testament, which was written during this era, reflects precisely the code of ethics and morals of the time - war, fight, "eye for an eye" attitude - which are very different from the ideas of humbleness, sacrifice and humility included 2,000 years later in the New Testament, written already in the Age of Pisces. The Age of Pisces (A.D. 0 - 2,000) The birth of Jesus Christ marked the beginning of the new Age of Pisces. The old patterns of combat and war (Mars) were replaced by the kind, charitable, forgiving qualities of Christians. Interestingly enough, the early secret Christian symbol, which was scrolled on catacomb walls to indicate to believers where the next meetings were to be held was the fish. Neptune is the planet that rules Pisces. Neptune is associated with very high, spiritual aspirations, religion and belief. So, it does not come as surprise that the church became the domineering institution in the life of people for the next 20 centuries. At the same time Neptune brings certain confusion, vagueness and deception, ultimately leading to sacrifice and suffering, which was also an important part of life during this period of time. The cloistered lives of monks and nuns show, too, the reclusive qualities of Pisces, and those groups of people who over the centuries made, and today still make, considerable sacrifices for their faith and for the benefit of less fortunate people in the community, are quintessentially Piscean qualities. But then again, we have to consider the influence of the opposite, polar sign of Virgo, as represented by the cult of the Virgin Mary and the very restrictive and extremely modest attitude of Christians to sex. This is one sphere of life, where we have already witnessed some dramatic changes in the past decades and no doubt we are going to see much more action happening in the future. More details about how our attitudes toward sex, masculinity and femininity are going to be completely re-evaluated on the brink of the new age of Aquarius you can read in my next article in "Universal Mind". The Age of Aquarius (A.D. 2,000 - 4,000) As I mentioned in the beginning of this article the interest of people towards the new "Age of Aquarius" was aroused after the great success of the American musical "Hair" in the 1960's. Astrologers were often asked when the new age was going to start, as if one day you go to bed in the age of Pisces and you wake up the other day already in the Age of Aquarius. Such dramatic changes as the fundamental transformation of the conditions on Earth in order to reflect totally different planetary influences take a lot of time to complete. In average such changes normally take about 100-150 years in which time the previous influences are gradually waning and the new ones are gaining momentum. It is more or less accepted in the astrological circles that the Age of Aquarius "officially" started with the first World War and it is about to complete in the next 20-30 years. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus and some Uranus keywords that come to mind are humanity, independence, inventiveness, new technologies, unpredictability, eccentricity, perversity. So, what does that mean in simple terms for us, the mere mortals? How are our lives going to change in the Age of Aquarius?
First of all the new Age becomes very evident in the sphere of new technologies, computing, space travel and science which are all quintessential Aquarian characteristics. And indeed if we think for a moment about all the technical gadgets that surround us and make our life much easier we will find out that most of those things were practically not existent 100 years ago - running hot and cold water in our kitchens, electricity, fridges, microwaves, television, telephone, computers, Internet, cars, highways, airplanes and so on just to mention a few. And if you think that this is the limit, then you must have a really limited imagination. Living in a virtual reality, for example, is just around the corner, where everybody will be able to invent and live in his or her own reality simulated by mega-powerful computers. This means that people will be able to change virtually their looks, create whatever virtual reality they like around them, pick up partners that exactly simulate the best characteristics that they are looking for and do with them whatever they please. The sensations of such encounters will be as authentic (if not better) as the real encounter. For the dangers hidden in the mass computerisation of society we will talk on another occasion.

The humanitarian side of Aquarius is also noticeable in organizations like the United Nations and many conservation organizations. But, we don't have to forget the influence of the polar sign - Leo. While Leo is benevolent, generous and obliging, at the same time he wants to remain the King of the Zodiac and to run the show himself. Thus, it is very likely that during the Age of Aquarius we will see the establishment of a benevolent World Government, but it is also possible that we will be exposed to the danger of being totally controlled from one single World centre.

The unpredictability of Uranus is already revealing itself in the changes of the global climate. It is an undeniable fact that the weather is not any more what it used to be years ago. At present, we may suffer in extreme heat on one day and then be swamped by floods on the other. Again, the reasons for this unpredictable behaviour of the weather have to be sought in the rapid expansion of industries and associated with them damage to the environment. Aquarius, though, loves the nature and we will see the young (already Aquarian) generation putting a lot of effort to save the planet Earth. The young generation is going to right the wrongs, done by the older much more careless generations.

The eccentricity and perversity of Uranus is going to be felt even stronger in the sphere of love relationships between people. Uranus does not dim the sexual powers of attraction; quite the opposite he actually increases them. At the same time, however, Aquarius (being ruled by Uranus) is the most independent and individualistic sign of all. This sign generally has the greatest difficulties of all other signs of the Zodiac to fit into the traditional family model. The yoke of the family life requires too many personal sacrifices and this goes against the Aquarian nature. The qualities of the previous Great Year of Pisces - sacrifice, suffering and abstinence from sex do not appeal to Aquarius at all! Instead he yearns for liberty, freedom and enjoyment.

And indeed, we can see how the morale of people is changing in front of our own eyes year after year - what was considered a taboo several decades ago is now a norm. The number of people remaining in stable marriages is now definitely a minority. In the future it is likely that Uranus is going to wreck this social structure altogether in order to build something different - a union between two people based on spiritual affinity, where both partners have a lot of room for themselves and where the relationship exists only for a duration of time suitable for both of them. The number of unusual, odd and strange forms of sexual relations is also going to rise. Being gay, lesbian, bisexual or whatever the case might be is going to be considered completely normal; quite the contrary-being in a marriage for 30 years is going to be considered weird. The exact impact on all these changes to our sex life is going to be discussed in my next article.

As an astrologer and clairvoyant, I feel obliged to tell the people about the coming changes in their lives. Most of them will inevitably occur, even if we like them or not. My intention is not to scare people, but to prepare them for what is coming around the corner. As we gain more and more understanding about the hidden forces that control our lives, our fears come to an end, because we understand that the spirits in charge of the global changes on our planet love us immensely and are leading us towards ever higher and higher spiritual dimensions, according to theeternal law of evolution.

Italian Property - Ten Beautiful Places to Buy or Rent a House in Italy

!: Italian Property - Ten Beautiful Places to Buy or Rent a House in Italy

Anyone who publishes a list, for example a Top 10 list,, should answer a couple of good questions: why that number and why those items were chosen. In this case, answering the first question is easy. Obviously the choice of a number is always arbitrary and ten is a very small number for a task like this, but it is so well referenced from so remote time, that I can go straight to use it. On the contrary, the second question deserves some more explanation. All the places below have been chosen thinking about a foreigner who wants to find a home for leisure in Italy. I cared to avoid cities. I also avoided places so famous to be almost impossible, such as Cortina d'Ampezzo, Portofino, Chianti region, Amalfi, Capri and so on. Everyone already knows these places, so adding them to the list would be of no help to the reader. I have selected the ten places below having in mind these two simple objectives: they had to be affordable (no stellar prices) and, on the whole, representative of the most typical aspects of Italian territory. I hope to have accomplished this task at least in part. My true opinion is that every selection of this kind should be taken with a bit of scepticism. Far from being definitive, it is just intended to arouse interest and stimulate further exploration..

Finally, here is the list of the sites. The indications of price you find in each description are dated 1sthalf 2010.

Val Aurina - Alto Adige Cannobio - Lake Maggiore, Piedmont Riviera del Brenta - Veneto Varigotti - West Liguria Riviera Suvereto - Tuscany Todi - Umbria Nemi - Castelli Romani, Lazio Castellaneta Marina - Puglia Cabras - Sardinia Pantelleria - Sicily

Val Aurina - Alto Adige

Alto Adige (or South Tyrol), the region of the Dolomite mountains, has belonged to Italy since 1919, after the end of World War I. Most of the people speak German, and a small minority speak the traditional language called Ladino. They are, the most ancient inhabitants of the valleys around the Sella Group,Val Aurina is the most northern valley in Italy: it begins in Campo Tures and expands to the borders with Austria. It is not as famous as Gardena and Badia Valleys and perhaps it does not welcome visitors with equally breathtaking scenery, but it offers a good advantage: moderate prices combined with full year touristic facilities. In the winter, you can enjoy two well- equipped areas for alpine skiing and two wonderful plateaus for cross-country skiing. In the summer, there are a wide range of walks and trips of varying difficulty. The landscape is a never- ending green expansion of meadows dotted with yellow and lilac alpine flowers and rows of towering conifers. In Campo Tures, the most popular and expensive site in the valley, prices are usually lower than 4.000 euro / sqm. It is important to keep in mind that in Alto Adige real estate market is subject to a special regulation which favours residential buyers: there are few houses for not residents so you must be patient and quick to make a decision when a property is available. If you are thinking about purchasing a country house or a maso (a traditional farm surrounded by trees and pasture) be ready to face a nearly impossible mission.

Cannobio - Lake Maggiore

Situated on the Piedmont side in the high part of Lake Maggiore, Cannobio is the last Italian city before the Swiss border. On the road from Vernabia to Cannobio, the charm of the lake constantly merges with the alpine landscape: you can see peacks higher than 3,000 meters literally rising from the water (Monte Rosa is no more than 50 km far away). On the left side of the road, the valleys degrading to the lake hide small villages keeping their traditions untouched. The original core of Cannobio, today called the "Borgo", is made of narrow streets surrounded by tall buildings, with the purpose to make it easier to defend the city from the enemies coming from the lake. The walk on the lakefront from the southern point called "Amore" (Love) towards the beach ("Lido"), provides a view on the multicoloured row of buildings overlooking the lake; most of them date back to 18thand 19thcentury. The porticos are home to little shops and cafés. In the summer, the beach is crowded with people sunbathing or swimming in the chilly waters of the lake. The inland Cannobina valley, populated by characteristic villages offers enjoyable trips towards the Val Grande National Park, the largest wild area in Central Europe. The medieval hamlet of Carmime Superiore is remarkable with its gem of 14thcentury, the church of San Gottardo The price of a home ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 euros /sqm depending on the status and the position (the Borgo and lake-front are the most expensive zones). The prices for a country house in Cannobina valley are lower.

Riviera del Brenta -Veneto.

The Brenta Riviera is the area between Padua and Venice along river Brenta. This area is strongly characterized by the course of the river: from 16th to 18th century the rich Venetians were competing to build the most luxurious villas on the green banks of the Brenta. The classic forms of villa Foscari, in Malcontenta - designed by Palladio - and villa Soranzo in Fiesso, the baroque style villa Widmann in Mira and villa Pisani in Stra - sumptuous residence of the powerful Pisani family - are only some examples of the many magnificent buildings of that golden age. The best Venetian sculptors and painters were called to decorate the villas and the gardens. The proximity to Venice and Padua and the transport facility provided by the river, joined with the beauty of landscape and relaxing quiet of the rural environment, made this land eligible both for commerce and leisure. These special features are substantially lasting even today. The ten little towns overlooking the Brenta Riviera (the larger Mira, Dolo, Stra as the smaller Fossò, Vigonovo, Fiesso) provide good services and speedy links to Venice and Padua and are surrounded by the greenery of a gentle landscape. You can find terraced or independent houses with a garden as well as country houses: the prices are around 2.000 euros per sqm. Demanding people can look for an ancient home or a "barchessa", a historical Venetian rural building annexed to the villa. Not easy, not cheap, but not an impossible wish.

Varigotti - West Liguria Riviera

Varigotti is a small village in the municipality of Finale Ligure, 40 km west of Savona, on the West Riviera ("Riviera Ligure di Ponente"). It is not famous as its renowned counterparts on the East Riviera: sites as Portofino, Santa Margherita, Tellaro. However it lies on one of the most pristine stretch of the Liguria coast. Saraceni Bay, the beach east of Varigotti, dominated by the rocks, away from any building, is among the most beautiful in Italy. The strategic and repaired position of the site was appreciated from an ancient time.Probably, before year 1000 the Turkish (called Saraceni in the local language) established here a fixed base, taking advantage of the natural harbour of the bay. The influence of Arabic architecture can still be gathered in some houses of the old hamlet, showing details unusual to Liguria buildings. The old hamlet is located between the Aurelia road and the beach and it is doubtless the most valuable part of Varigotti. The houses in front of the sea (once upon owned by the fishermen) form a coloured curtain on the sand beach and often the sea water comes to lap the walls. The overlooking Punta Crena hill, with the ancient watchtower, dominates the village as a big cetacean. The inland consists of wild highlands covered by typical Mediterranean greenery and steep rock peaks, appreciated by climbers for training.A house in the old hamlet will cost no less than 7,000 Euros / sqm, even more if it is located on the sea-front. On the interior, good solutions can be found at a much lower price, often with spectacular views. Just take into consideration the difficulty of parking on the coast during the summer season.

Suvereto - Tuscany

The hill where the medieval village of Suvereto lies, in Cornia Valley, half a way between the two cities of Livorno and Grosseto at the border with the vast plain of Maremma, is dotted by cork oaks woods (here called "suvere", from which the name of "Suvereto"). Around Suvereto, the corks oaks are mixed with olives and vines, the typical trees of Mediterranean landscape and along the slopes of the hill you find everywhere small producers of oil and wine. The typical wine produced is a quality red wine made from blending of the local Sangiovese grapes with international Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Don't forget we are next to the vineyards of Bolgheri, wich offer their internationally renowned wines such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The climate is mild, you can walk through the corks and spy the deep blue of the wonderful Baratti Gulf. As many Italian villages set on the hills, Suvereto has mostly retained its medieval appearance. Inside the ancient walls, the narrow streets paved with stones describe a circular path around the old 13thCentury castle (now being restored), on the top of the hill. Half of the 3,000 residents live in the village, the remaining part live in farmhouses or in the other small villages of the municipality (San Lorenzo, Montioni, Forni, Prata, Belvedere). The price for a terraced house in Suvereto goes from 2,000 to 3,000 Euros / sqm. There is a good selection of farmhouses (here called "casali"), with more or less large extension of around land: in this case, expect paying a minimum of 500,000 euros.

Todi - Umbria

Todi enjoyed its moment of fame in 1992, when University of Kentucky professor Richard S. Levine chose it as the model sustainable city. Then, it was considered "the world's most livable city". Really, if you come here and walk around the city or travel the road to Orvieto through the green gentle slopes, you get the impression that things and nature have a harmonious balance. It is the same harmony that Bramante infused in the volumes of "Santa Maria della Consolazione" church, outside the walls, or that you can find at the heart of the city, on "Piazza del Popolo" (People Square), bounded at the opposite sides by the medieval buildings of the Cathedral and the Priori Palace. Todi was founded in 8thcentury BC with the name of "Tutere" (Border) because it was at the border with the Etruscan kingdom. In 18thcentury a historian counted 365 castles, villas and fortified places in its municipality, so he wrote that Todi could boast to have one different castle for every day of the year. Nowadays, the 37 remaining castles spread on the hills constitute the villages of Todi municipality, one of the largest in Umbria. The prices for a whole farmhouse on the hills or a flat inside the Todi walls or in a restored cottage are quite appealing (from 1,000 to 2,000 euros / sqm) and good solutions are not lacking.

Nemi - Castelli Romani, Lazio

Castelli Romani (literally: Roman Castles) are the historical villages on the slopes of Alban Hills (Colli Albani), a few kilometres south-east of Rome and Fiumicino airport. The volcanic origin of Colli Albani is testified by the two big craters on the top of the hills, now home to two picturesque lakes (Lago Albano and Lago Nemi). During the centuries, Colli Albani have always been a peaceful retreat for Rome rich residents (for example, Castelgandolfo hosts a magnificent papal residence): many of their ancient villas and palaces can still be admired all around the area. Nowadays, Castelli Romani are a favourite destination for the Sunday trips of Rome inhabitants, and are well-known for their genuine products, such as white wines (Frascati is the most famous), strawberries, peaches and fish from the lakes. Nemi, hidden on the top of the hill, overlooking the lake, is the smallest of Castelli Romani and goes famous for its delicious strawberries. The village is dominated by the big tower of Ruspoli Palace. The legend says that here is the root of the Roman Empire: Romolo, the first Roman King, is the son of a Vestal Priestess, Rea Silva, probably resident in Nemus Arcinum, the village which today is Nemi. Flats and country houses are on sale at about 3.000 euro/sqm.

Castellaneta Marina - Puglia

The village of Castellaneta Marina, in the municipality of Castellaneta, was founded in the 60s after the drainage of the area, with a purely touristic purpose. In fact, it is mostly composed by villas fully immersed in the pinewood. It is curious that the names of the streets mention the Moon geography and the American and Russian spacemen, recalling the space voyages from the period of its foundation. The dunes behind the beach (more and more rare on the Italian coast due to urbanization) are covered by a typical low shrubbery. Despite the strong tourism, the long sandy coast is still largely uncontaminated and the sea is warm and clean. Behind the beach and the pinewood the vast Metaponto Plane lies, home to ancient colonies of Magna Graecia (the archaeological area is near Metaponto, where Greek philosopher Pythagoras is said to have lived). On the coast, residences, resorts and sea establishments alternate with stretches of public sea (the nearby Riva dei Tessali hosts one of the best golf courses in Italy). On the interior, distant about 20 km away, the city of Castellaneta, perched on the crest of a mountain, overlooks a spectacular canyon more than 100 meters high. With the old white town and the baroque buildings, this gem well worth a visit. You can find a good house surrounded by the aromas of Castellaneta Marina pinewood at a not daunting price: 2,000 - 3,000 Euros / sqm.

Cabras - Sardinia

Far from the splendor of luxurious Costa Smeralda, on the Sardinia west coast, Sinis peninsula and Oristano Gulf are an area of great natural and scenic interest, already known by Punic and Phoenician many centuries BC. Punic probably founded the village of Tharros, in the southern promontory of Sinis peninsula, before 1000 BC, and exploited the fertile ground and the sheltered bay. Cabras was founded in 12thcentury by the residents of Tharros who were escaping from North-African pirates invasions. It lies on the shore of the largest pool of brackish water in Italy ("Stagno di Cabras") one of the largest in Europe, natural habitat of pink flamingos and other typical water birds. The coast of Sinis peninsula is uninhabited for large stretches and it is home to beaches of great beauty, quiet and not crowded. The most famous, "Is Arutas" beach, several hundred meters long, looks white shining because of the sand consisting of small white and pink rounded quartz grains. "San Giovanni di Sinis" beach, next to Tahrros ruins, overlooked by an ancient watchtower, is long four km and is characterized by the high accumulations of sand caused by the west wind. From Capo Mannu, on the northern side of the peninsula, you can reach the uninhabited "Mal di Ventre" Island (literally: stomach ache, but the Italian name is a corruption of local name Maluentu, i.e. bad wind), a flat extension of Mediterranean vegetation and charming coves. The Sinis peninsula has not yet had a full tourist development and house prices in Cabras are low (from 1,000 to 1,500 Euros / sqm), but the most interesting solutions are outside the town, and prices increase with proximity to sea.

Pantelleria - Sicily

Half way between Sicily and Africa coast, Pantelleria Island is one of the most southern spot of Italy. It is the largest of minor Sicily islands, with a population of about 7,000. Here, the Mediterranean reveals its strongest colours and its harshest nature: the strong character of the island has fascinated celebrities such as Sting and Madonna. The coasts of lava rock are high and jagged (a trip by boat is mandatory): the famous elephant trunk - an arch of rock ending in the sea - is the symbol of the island. The inland is characterized by a variety of wild caper (fragrant Pantelleria Capers, now mainly cultivated) and vineyards of Muscat and "Zibibbo" grapes which give the fine delicious "Passito di Pantelleria". Citrus trees were imported by Arabs, who carefully protected them from winds by high drywalls. The island, known as "Child of Wind" by the ancient Arabic inhabitants, is the residual of a big volcanic crater surrounded by 24 smaller ones. Their activity is still visible in the many thermal sources, natural saunas and steam flowing from the stones, which are a kind of free open SPA. The "Specchio di Venere" (Venus Mirror) is a small lake springing from an underground sulphurous source, where you can take a regenerating bath. Because of the dry climate and volcanic origin, drinking water is a rare good on the whole island: it is distributed weekly by trucks bringing it to the various districts. The typical house of Pantelleria is called "Dammuso" and has an Arabic origin. It is a cubic farm building made of lava stones with round arch openings to counter the heat and a white dome roof to collect the rainwater. Dammusos are the most requested and most expensive homes on the island. You can find a Dammuso (even ancient) in an idyllic position, with a garden enclosed by high circular drywalls at the starting price of 4,000 euros / sqm. For a terraced house, the price is about 2,500 euros / sqm.

Births, Marriages and Deaths - A Guide to Greek Festivals and Holidays

!: Births, Marriages and Deaths - A Guide to Greek Festivals and Holidays

Religion
The Greek population is composed of 97% Christian Orthodox (with the remaining 3% comprising of Roman Catholic, Muslims and Jews). According to the history of Orthodoxy it was St Paul who first came to the Greek world to preach Christianity in 49AD. But the real founder of Orthodoxy was Emperor Constantine the Great, who converted to Christianity in the 4th century. Officially and as in all European countries the Greek State and the Orthodox Church are separate, however the Greek Orthodox Church has great power in Greek society.

Baptism
Children of Orthodox families are normally baptized shortly after birth. Orthodoxy sees baptism as more than a mere washing but a rebirth. Baptism is by full immersion because the word "baptizo" means - to immerse. During the service the water is blessed and the infant fully immersed in the water three times in the name of the Holy Trinity. According to the Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church ONE name of Orthodox Christian origin should be given to the child at the time of baptism. The child is anointed with olive oil and then dressed in the new clothes especially purchased for this occasion alone. Four locks of hair are cut from the child's head in the sign of the cross. The role of the God parents is an important one, since the infant is unable to make the necessary confession of Faith, the Godparents stand and accept the responsibility.

Marriage
Within the Orthodox Church marriage is seen as an act of God in which he sanctifies the joining of two people into one. Marriage in the Orthodox Church has two distinct parts: The Betrothal and The Crowning.

The Betrothal includes: The exchange of the rings, the procession, the declaration of intent, and the lighting of candles. The priest blesses the rings, holds them in his right hand, and makes the sign of the cross over the Bride and Grooms heads. The exchange of rings symbolizes the unbreakable bond of Christian Marriage and the rings are placed on their right hands, for it is the right hand of God that blesses and it was the right hand of God to which Christ ascended.

The Crowning includes: The readings from the epistle and gospel, the Blessing of the Common Cup, the Dance of Isaiah, and then the Removal of the Crowns. The focal point of the crowning ceremony is the exchanging of the wedding crowns (stefana) which are joined by a ribbon symbolizing the unity of the couple and the presence of Christ who blesses and joins the couple and establishes them as the King and Queen of their home. The priest takes the two crowns and blesses The Bride and The Groom, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and then places the crowns on their heads. The Koumbaro (best man) then steps behind the Bride and Groom and interchanges the crowns three times as a witness to the sealing of the union. Wine is then drunk by the couple from the Common Cup which serves to impress upon the couple that from that moment on they will share everything in life. Whilst three hymns are chanted the priest leads the Bride and the Groom in a circle around the table (the Dance of Isaiah) on which the Gospel and the Cross are placed. The circle symbolizes eternity and the triple circling honours the Holy Spirit. At the conclusion of the Ceremonial Walk, the priest removes the crowns thus ending the marriage ceremony.

There is no exchange of vows. There is a set expectation of the obligations incumbent on a married couple, and whatever promises they may have privately to each other are their responsibility to keep. Finally there is the greeting of the couple. Divorce is rare in the Orthodox Church.

National Holidays
1st January - New Years Day

6th January - Epiphany
Orthodox belief acknowledges this as the day of the baptism of Jesus and this is where the day's association with water stems from, so it is on this day that the traditional blessing of the waters takes place. Part of the ritual is when the Priest throws the cross into the cold January waters and young men brave the icy temperatures to dive in and retrieve it. The one who brings the cross to the surface will enjoy good luck for the entire year.

30th January - Three Heirarchs Day
This school holiday commemorates St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom, although each Saint has their own special day to honour them individually the 30th January honours them collectively as the Patron Saints of Education as they are considered the Fathers of Orthodox Education and Literacy.

25th March - This day has dual status as both a National and Religious holiday:

- The Feast of the Annunciation
Marks the visit of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would conceive a child to be born the Son of God.
- Greek Independence Day
The celebration of the start of the Greek Revolution when the Greeks rose up against the oppressive Ottoman Empire which had occupied Greece for 400 years. After a long and bloody struggle, independence was finally granted by the Treaty of Constantinople in 1832.

Easter
The Greek Orthodox Easter is calculated on the Julian calendar whilst the Western Church uses the Gregorian calendar and this is why the festivities do not usually occur on the same day. Greek Orthodox Easter should fall on the Sunday after the first full moon of the spring equinox and this is why Easter and the holidays related to it are moveable feasts.

Clean Monday
This is the first day of the Eastern Orthodox Lent which occurs at the beginning of the 7th week before Easter Sunday Referred to as 'clean' because Christians are called upon to begin the Holy season with 'clean hearts and good intentions'. Marks the beginning of the Lenten Fast the period during which the Greeks abstain from eating meat, fish, poultry and diary. Families take to the beaches and countryside to celebrate with outdoor picnics and the widespread custom of flying kites.

Megali Evthomatha (Holy Week)
The Holy week of Easter begins on Palm Sunday and Church services commemorating the last week in the life of Jesus Christ are held everyday.

Holy Thursday
Thursday mornings service commemorates the Last Supper and the Betrayal of Christ and is the day the Greeks prepare the Red Eggs. Hard boiled eggs are dyed red to signify the blood of Christ.

Good Friday - The Procession of the Epitaphios of Christ.
The Epitaphios is a large piece of cloth embroidered with the image of Christ. On this day Greek women and children go the Church to decorate the symbolic coffin (that will carry the Epitaphios) with flowers. Christ's burial is re-enacted in Church and in the evening the Epitaphios is taken from the Church and carried through the streets in a solemn procession.

Easter Saturday
The Saturday midnight mass is the one dedicated to the celebration of Christ's Resurrection. Each person takes an unlit candle to the Church. Just before midnight the Church lights are extinguished. At exactly midnight the Priest comes from behind the altar carrying a candle lit with the Holy light of the Resurrection. He will announce 'Christos Anesti' (Christ has arisen) to which the reply is 'Alithos Anesti' (Truly he has risen) and he will light the candle of someone inside the Church and then the flame is passed from candle to candle filling the Church with light. The Church bells ring joyfully and fireworks are set off. People carefully return home with their lighted candles and before entering their houses make a cross with the candle smoke on the front door in order to bless its inhabitants. They will feast on Magiritsa a thick soup made from Lambs sweetmeats and herbs and crack the red eggs. Each person takes an egg and challengers attempt to crack each others eggs. The owner of the last uncracked egg is assured good luck for the rest of the year.

Easter Sunday
Visits are made to family and friends and the Easter meal which is truly a feast is shared with everyone. Spit roast lamb is the centrepiece of the table accompanies by salads, rice dishes, vegetable dishes and breads. Retsina, wine and ouzo flow ensuring that celebrations last throughout the day and into the night.

Easter Monday
A more low key day with everyone preparing to return to work and school.

1st May - Labour Day
The day when flower festivals take place in many parts of Greece and many Greeks collect flowers to make wreaths to hang from their doors.

15th August - Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Also known as the Feast of the Dormition it is the biggest Holy day of the summer as it Commemorates the ascent into Heaven of the Virgin Mary after her death.

28th October - Ohi Day
The famous 'No' day in 1940 that commemorates the Greek Dictator Ioannia Metaxas rejection of the Italian Dictators demand to allow Axis bases on Greek territory, thus entering Greece into World War II on the side of the Allies.

25th December - Christmas Day
Although gaining in significance, Christmas is not considered as important as Easter to the Greeks as the Faith itself centres around the Resurrection rather than the birth or death of Jesus Christ.

26th December - Boxing Day

Name Days
In Greece a person's Name Day is considered more important than their birthday and is always celebrated. Great significance is attached to the naming of a child and the process of choosing a name follows fairly rigid conventions. Children are never named after their parents but more usually after their grandparents, with the eldest son in the family being named after his paternal grandfather and the eldest daughter being named after her paternal grandmother.

Names are usually of religious origin. According to the Greek Orthodox tradition nearly every day of the year is dedicated to a Christian Saint or Martyr. When someone is named after one of these Saints, this day becomes their name day and is celebrated.

Some popular name days:

St Gerassimos - Kefalonia
St Spyridon - Corfu
St Nectarios - Aegin

The Success of Moorish Agriculture (Part I)

!: The Success of Moorish Agriculture (Part I)

Expansion of the Islamic Empire during the 7th and 8th centuries, conquered huge sections of the Globe, its dominion entailed much of China, India, Persia, the Middle East, North Africa and the Iberian peninsula.

The Abbasdian Caliphate set in motion The Islamic Golden Age during the 8th century. Rare and valuable knowledge of ancient civilizations was translated and liberated: Mesopotamia, Byzantine, Persia, India, China, Rome, Greece and North Africa.

Peers to the Abbasidian Caliphate were the al-Andalus Umayyans and the Egyptian Fatimids. Both dynasties paralleled that Abbasidian enthusiasm - in the Islamic "quest for knowledge."

World Trading
Trading routes of the Islamic Empire swept vast regions of the world.
Islam acquired wisdom and mastery in global agriculture and began trading with crops of previously unknown plants.

New Agricultural Systems
The Spanish Arabs excelled in vast areas of knowledge; they were ingenious in agriculture. Spain had a wealth of water - which was not well furnished to many areas of the country.

The Masters of Water-Utilization
Conscientious comprehension in water-sharing and its consumption - the essence of great civilizations - dated from 6,000 BC during Babylonian times and the Persian Empire. The Arabs were inherent experts on hydrology and knew how to raise water.

A Principle Aim of the al-Andalus became Water Distribution
al-Andalusia was mined with Acequias: irrigation channels. Water travelled to places it had never been to before. Aljibes: were large water storage tanks and constructed throughout the country. A thorough understanding and use of hydrology-siphons permitted the reclamation of Spanish swamp-marshes. The use of the astrolabe proved invaluable, while calculating, construction of aqueducts.

Water was Treated like Gold
Water-distribution was meticulously managed by The Tribunal of Waters. Members of the Water Tribunal were chosen by the farmers. Wastage of water was punishable: nobles and slaves were treated alike if found guilty of misuse. Irrigation times were allotted to everyone: watering slots were meticulously measured and timed.

Science in Moorish Agriculture
Painstaking observations, documented experiences and hard labour were the backbone of the agricultural Green Revolution. Water and hydrology were the prime components for the enormous success in Agriculture. Prevention of soil erosion was equally studied in depth; much was done to protect the state of the soil. Steep land was terraced and planted with olive trees, vines, mulberry bushes or pomegranate trees. Nothing was wasted: manure, husks, hulls, fibres, plants and dead matter - all was of use.

Agriculture reached its pinnacle during the Cordovan Caliphate and its continued success lasted till the end of the Moors' presence on the Iberian peninsular. Not one person was illiterate - at that time. Moorish Agriculture was taught to adults in the local agricultural schools. Meteorology, ecological pest control, food storage, wine-making, culinary arts and manners of preserving foods - were part of the Agricultural curriculum.

Large sections of lands were divided into manageable plots. Landownership, in Moorish Spain was encouraged. Tending to a garden (or a plot) was a sacred act of worship. Gardens and fruit-bearing orchards were a reflection of Paradise on Earth. Paradise was mentioned many times in the Qur'an. Gardening induced meditation and peaceful reflections; it was valued by the royals and every subject.

Herbs and Spices
Botany became popular. Herbs were studied, for many reasons, but primarily - for pharmacological requirements: Diuretics, laxatives, carminatives, sudatory herbs, antiseptics, analgesics, medicinal oils, narcotics, etc. all derived from herbs.

Royal Gardens and Earthly Paradise
Islam is represented by many symbols.
Islamic Gardens were created according to Chahar Bagh design: the Generalife Gardens and the Patio de los Leones of the Alhambra, in Andalucia, are perfect examples. Eternity: symbolized by cypress trees, flowering fruit trees: the renewal of life. Spring and summer flowers graced day gardens - while fragrant white blooms perfumed every night. All Islamic symbols of Paradise on Earth.

Steven and Aaron Reed have written a unique story with regard to three families growing up poverty stricken in the mountains of Virginia in the late 1930's - "The Myth of the Summer Moon." The authors gift their story in a thoughtful way weaving Greek legend straight through out the plot. The characters are strong and easy to love.

Jimmy is a fourteen year old struck by the pangs of love for the first time. He is drawn to Helena, a beautiful young, Greek girl of few words. Many think Helena "slow" and call her names or avoid her. Jimmy looks deep insider her and sees something others refuse to see. Both families lost their mum at a young age. It is easy to see the consequent this has on both families. Is Helena truly slow or does her soul run deeper than those nearby her?

Frankie was my beloved character. A high school student, Jimmy's sister, friend and caretaker, she has willingly taken on the role that few girls her age could handle. Frankie is beautiful, spirited, courageous, mature and loving. She is protective of her family. Frankie is not afraid of a fight and will do anything it takes to perform what needs to be done. Frankie has a strong spirit.

Titus is a bull. He and Frankie seem to have an understanding. He respects her. One can practically believe Titus is a Greek God. He periodically challenges Frankie but knows she will always win. He also seems to understand the undercurrents and reacts protectively.

The families obviously love each other. When Helena asks Papikos to share a story you can feel the house bonds. One house all living together in a way we now rarely see, grandparents, children and grandchildren cohabiting in the same house in harmony.

This is a tale of growing up in a time following a depression. This is a time when children were unbelievable to help with chores without pay. This is a time of strong house ties. A time few young people now can imagine.

I fully enjoyed this book. I didn't want it to end. I found myself wondering if it was based on a true story. Aaron and Steven, well done.

Reed Benton doesn't want a wife. But he does need someone to look after the boy--a bitter reminder of a past ravaged by lies and betrayal. It will take a miracle to heal these two damaged souls . . . or the faith of one woman with nothing left to lose but her heart.

Summer Moon is a deeply moving story of broken promises and new beginnings, crafted by a true master of romantic fiction.

From the Hardcover edition.

Don't pick a crazy "starvation diet" that will do your body more harm than good in the long run. pick a diet that you can stick that will give you the body you desire not only in the short term but in the long term too! Low calorie diets are out because they slow down your metabolism too much and you end up gaining all of that weight back (with interest!)

Low carb diets are out because they are impossible to supervene over the long term.

You need a diet that is easy to supervene and that allows you the occassional "day off" so that you allow yourself to satisfy the cravings that commonly get you off policy and so that you keep your metabolism boosted.

The Right Exercise

Cardio is fine but what you precisely need to make your body look great is strength training. Too many women think that strength training is just for men. And too many men think it's just for men who want to look "huge." That's not the Case. strength training is an incredibly foremost part to having a fit body. It's a big key to losing fat fast and to keeping that fat off.

Why is strength training so important? Because each pound of muscle you add to your body will burn an further 50 calories per day at rest. Collate that to a pound of fat that burns only 2 calories a day. You can imagine how adding a few pounds of muscle can precisely make it easier to lose weight and to keep it off long term.
