Few people realize that the Comanche Indians were the greatest warring tribe in American history. Their forty-year battle with settlers held up the development of the new nation. Empire of the Summer Moon tells of the rise and fall of this fierce, powerful, and proud tribe, and begins in 1836 with the kidnapping of a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower blue eyes named Cynthia Ann Parker. She grew to love her captors and eventually became famous as the "White Squaw." She married a powerful Comanche chief, and their son, Quanah, became a warrior who was never defeated and whose bravery and military brilliance in the Texas panhandle made him a legend as one of the greatest of the Plains Indian chiefs. In this vivid piece of writing, S. C. Gwynne describes in sometimes brutal detail the savagery of both whites and Comanches and, despite the distance of time, demonstrates how truly shocking these events were, juxtaposed against the haunting story of an unforgettable figure of a woman caught between two worlds.

Steven and Aaron Reed have written a unique story with regard to three families growing up poverty stricken in the mountains of Virginia in the late 1930's - "The Myth of the Summer Moon." The authors gift their story in a thoughtful way weaving Greek legend straight through out the plot. The characters are strong and easy to love.

Jimmy is a fourteen year old struck by the pangs of love for the first time. He is drawn to Helena, a beautiful young, Greek girl of few words. Many think Helena "slow" and call her names or avoid her. Jimmy looks deep insider her and sees something others refuse to see. Both families lost their mum at a young age. It is easy to see the consequent this has on both families. Is Helena truly slow or does her soul run deeper than those nearby her?

Frankie was my beloved character. A high school student, Jimmy's sister, friend and caretaker, she has willingly taken on the role that few girls her age could handle. Frankie is beautiful, spirited, courageous, mature and loving. She is protective of her family. Frankie is not afraid of a fight and will do anything it takes to perform what needs to be done. Frankie has a strong spirit.

Titus is a bull. He and Frankie seem to have an understanding. He respects her. One can practically believe Titus is a Greek God. He periodically challenges Frankie but knows she will always win. He also seems to understand the undercurrents and reacts protectively.

The families obviously love each other. When Helena asks Papikos to share a story you can feel the house bonds. One house all living together in a way we now rarely see, grandparents, children and grandchildren cohabiting in the same house in harmony.

This is a tale of growing up in a time following a depression. This is a time when children were unbelievable to help with chores without pay. This is a time of strong house ties. A time few young people now can imagine.

I fully enjoyed this book. I didn't want it to end. I found myself wondering if it was based on a true story. Aaron and Steven, well done.

Acclaimed author Jill Marie Landis has gifted readers with award-winning love stories that express the most intimate longings of the human heart. With unique insight and irresistible wit, she breathes vivid life into her characters while depicting superb settings of stunning beauty and realism. Now, in her long-awaited hardcover debut, Jill Marie Landis tells the tender tale of a woman without choices who risks everything for one last chance at happiness.

RANCHER SEEKING WIFE. For Kate Whittington, the modest words of a newspaper ad are the answer to her desperate prayers. Daughter of a dockside harlot and raised in a bleak orphanage, she has no prospects in the unforgiving Maine village of her birth. Correspondence from the lonely Texas widower looking for a mail-order bride sparks tempting dreams of a house, a family, and a future in a land filled with possibilities.

Kate arrives at the magnificent Lone Star Ranch eager to meet her new husband. Instead she is greeted by the news that Reed Benton has been wounded during a raid on a Comanche village and has returned with a prisoner--a wild-looking young boy who may be his long lost son. Even more shattering, however, is the fact that Reed has never heard of Kate, never wrote the searing letters that charmed her heart.

Reed Benton doesn't want a wife. But he does need someone to look after the boy--a bitter reminder of a past ravaged by lies and betrayal. It will take a miracle to heal these two damaged souls . . . or the faith of one woman with nothing left to lose but her heart.

Summer Moon is a deeply moving story of broken promises and new beginnings, crafted by a true master of romantic fiction.

From the Hardcover edition.

Don't pick a crazy "starvation diet" that will do your body more harm than good in the long run. pick a diet that you can stick that will give you the body you desire not only in the short term but in the long term too! Low calorie diets are out because they slow down your metabolism too much and you end up gaining all of that weight back (with interest!)

Low carb diets are out because they are impossible to supervene over the long term.

You need a diet that is easy to supervene and that allows you the occassional "day off" so that you allow yourself to satisfy the cravings that commonly get you off policy and so that you keep your metabolism boosted.

The Right Exercise

Cardio is fine but what you precisely need to make your body look great is strength training. Too many women think that strength training is just for men. And too many men think it's just for men who want to look "huge." That's not the Case. strength training is an incredibly foremost part to having a fit body. It's a big key to losing fat fast and to keeping that fat off.

Why is strength training so important? Because each pound of muscle you add to your body will burn an further 50 calories per day at rest. Collate that to a pound of fat that burns only 2 calories a day. You can imagine how adding a few pounds of muscle can precisely make it easier to lose weight and to keep it off long term.

In the tradition of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all.

S. C. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moonspans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Although readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined just how and when the American West opened up. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six; full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. White settlers arriving in Texas from the eastern United States were surprised to find the frontier being rolled backward by Comanches incensed by the invasion of their tribal lands. So effective were the Comanches that they forced the creation of the Texas Rangers and account for the advent of the new weapon specifically designed to fight them: the six-gun.

The war with the Comanches lasted four decades, in effect holding up the development of the new American nation. Gwynne’s exhilarating account delivers a sweeping narrative that encompasses Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, the destruction of the buffalo herds, and the arrival of the railroads—a historical feast for anyone interested in how the United States came into being.

Against this backdrop Gwynne presents the compelling drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower-blue eyes who was kidnapped by Comanches from the far Texas frontier in 1836. She grew to love her captors and became infamous as the "White Squaw" who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. More famous still was her son Quanah, a warrior who was never defeated and whose guerrilla wars in the Texas Panhandle made him a legend.

S. C. Gwynne’s account of these events is meticulously researched, intellectually provocative, and, above all, thrillingly told. Empire of the Summer Moon announces him as a major new writer of American history.

±1±: Best Buy Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S. C. Gwynne is an eye opening account of an often overlooked era of this country's history. S. C. Gwynne is a consummate researcher and storyteller displaying the love of his topic.

Gwynne manages to tell this multilevel, multifaceted story in a riveting manner. Relating history is a difficult task to do well. Very few authors seem to have the ability to relate history is a manner that makes it interesting and then manages to hit all the high spots. The late Barbara Tuchman did it well as did Stephen Ambrose and David G. McCullough. High praise for Gwynne? Yes, and well deserved.

Empire of the Moon examines the forty year battle waged by the Comanche nation against the constant encroachment of pioneers from the young United States. They had fought off the Spanish, French, and Mexican invaders and were doing a pretty good job in forestalling the American invasion. But the relentless push of westward settlement eventually won out. It is the attention to details and the development of the principle characters that makes Gwynnes book unique. This is especially true in how he deals with the young Cynthia Parker, the white girl taken captive and raised as a Comanche. She disappeared after this but eventually adopted the Comanche way of life, married a chief and became the mother of Quanah Parker, the center for Gwynne's book. Gwynne must have had access to new resources since he presents new details to the reader (new to me, anyway). At the risk of being obvious, the story of Cynthia Parker makes the purchase and reading of this book worthwhile by itself. But then the story of her son, Quanah will captivate you.

Quanah perhaps killed more Americans than any other Native-American. However, the closing years of his life, after he fought the good fight, he raised cattle, ran for the school board and attended the 1905 inauguration of Teddy Roosevelt as a personal guest of the President. Astounding!

As an amateur historian, I've concentrated on other areas of American history, especially focusing on the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne as they relate to the Little Bighorn. Empire of the Summer Moon is a new area of interest and thanks to Gwynne I will continue to read.

I highly recommend Empire of the Summer Moon.

Peace always.
